Family matters: same‐sex relations and kinship practices in Kenya

Abstract Guided by social justice and sexual health concerns, scholars of same‐sex sexualities in Africa have mainly examined related conflicts inequities, generating an unbalanced emphasis on homophobia. Following Stella Nyanzi's plea for a broader exploration queer sexuality Africa, we move beyond the strictly sphere to study kinship arrangements couples Kenya. These rely different possibilities afforded – both its inclusive exclusive capacities create accommodation acceptance. Capturing complexities paradoxes life, ethnographic practices everyday life shows how homophobia can co‐exist. Furthermore, embeddedness relationships structures subscription same norms held cross‐sex clearly indicates difficulty construing these forms relatedness as essentially from other formations. Thus ‘queering Africa’ requires not only taking perspective looking what is usually classified ‘queer’ but also un‐queering at first appears thus ‘queerying’ barriers range that characterize lives subjectivities people with desires.
